A highlight of the Holiday Season at Walt Disney World is Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (or MVMCP), which is held at the Magic Kingdom on selected nights from November 8 until December 19. With the chance to see magical fireworks, a parade and live shows, plus carolers, special characters, “snow” on Main Street and all the cookies and hot chocolate you want, it’s easy to see why this is a great way to get into the holiday spirit. A “hard ticket” event, MVMCP is not included as part of regular park ticket admission however, so if you want to attend, you will need to pay extra.
But if you are visiting Disney World during this time frame, should you pay the extra money for it? And if you do, how can you get the most for your money?
Glad you asked. Let’s talk some basics first.
Dates/Time: This year, MVMCP is being held on the following dates: November 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 28, and 30; and December 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, and 19. While the party “officially” begins at 7 p.m., in previous years, guests have been able to enter the Magic Kingdom for the party starting at 4pm. As the party begins, those guests who have MVMCP tickets will receive a wristband that indicates they are attending the Party. At 7 p.m. the Magic Kingdom will officially close to non-party guests and those without tickets will be asked (politely) to leave. Don’t even think about trying to hang around to join the party without a ticket, as there typically are castmembers who will be checking wristbands throughout the evening, including at each of the ride entrances.
- Cost: Advance Purchase: $57.46 adults/$51.07 ages 3-9; Passholder and DVC Member Discounts: $53.20/$46.81. Advance purchase is not available December 7, 10, 12, 17 or 19. Cost the day of the event (if available): $63.85 /$57.46. All prices include tax. You can order tickets online or by calling (407) WDISNEY or (407) 934-7639.
- What You Get: Well….lots. :) The highlights are:
-
The Castle Dream Lights that transform Cinderella’s Castle with 200,000 twinkling white lights into a sparkling, magical ice palace.
-
Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade, featuring a variety of special Christmas themes, dancing snowflakes, Wooden Soldiers, and of course a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus.
-
“Holiday Wishes, Celebrate the Spirit of the Season” fireworks that offer Disney’s dazzling fireworks set to holiday songs.
-
Live shows at both the Castle and in Tomorrowland, featuring Disney Characters.
-
Special meet and greets with Disney Characters.
-
A magical snow fall on Main Street, U.S.A.
-
Complimentary cookies and hot cocoa
-
So is it Worth it?
Maybe, and maybe not. It really depends on a number of things for your own family situation. You certainly should consider the ages of your children and how well they do after a certain time of the evening. Will an afternoon nap help? In addition, as you are deciding, you should realize that:
- All the decorations (except for the “snow”) are out during regular operating hours…no need to pay extra for this.
- If you will be at Disney during Christmas/New Year’s week, you can see both the parade and Holiday Wishes during regular operating hours….for no additional cost.
- The Castle Dream Lights are lit between 6 and 6:30…before the beginning of MVMCP and are lit every night from December 20 to January 2…again, for free.
So if those are the most important things that you want to see at MVMCP, and you will be at Disney World after December 20, you may very well want to save your money. However, there are other benefits to attending the Party that you should think about:
- There will be less people in Magic Kingdom than during the day. Lines will be shorter to see both attractions and the characters. You will be able to ride the major FASTPASS rides and meet a lot of characters in less time than normal. And with that lower crowd level, you will probably enjoy your time a bit more.
- If you are visiting between November 8 and December 19, the only chance to see the special Christmas parade and Holiday Wishes is at MVMCP.
- For many folks, the characters, shows and entertainment are worth the cost of admission alone, and these are not offered at other times.
- Free cocoa and cookies.
I’m Going! How Can I Make the Most of My Time (and Money?)
As with everything at Disney World, there are ways to plan and strategize so that you are making this event as affordable as possible.
- Take a look at the weather forecast, especially the predicted low temperatures. It can get cold. Average lows are in the mid-50s but I have been there when it was in the 30s. Bring a sweatshirt, jacket or coat, as well as some gloves…or prepare to buy them in the Disney gift stores.
- Take a break in the afternoon so that you (and your little ones) have the energy to stay for the full 5 hours, until midnight. Crowds will be lightest after 11 p.m. If you can arrive right after 4, you can get your wristband and get started having fun even earlier.
- Don’t waste Party time eating dinner. Plan your meal before it starts, whether you are eating counter service or want a table service meal. And if you are planning a table service meal, make your Advanced Dining Reservations well in advance.
- The line for Fantasyland characters will grow rapidly, so go at the end of the night, or be in line before 7.
- Go to the second parade each night as it is less crowded than the first one, and do the major rides during the first parade. Visit Fantasyland after 11 p.m. when little ones have left.
- Go left to start at Adventureland, as most people will start in Tomorrowland.
Things to Keep in Mind When Buying Tickets
Before you order your MVMCP tickets, there are some things keep in mind.
- Since you can start the Party at 4 p.m., many folks decide not to get the Park Hopper option on their tickets, and attend a different park earlier in the day….and then essentially “hop” to Magic Kingdom at 4, without using a Park Hopper. Saves money!
- Another strategy is to just not get theme park tickets for that day at all, and rest/relax at the resort earlier in the day. If you are only staying a few days this will save you more money than if you are staying more than 7 days though, since at that point, the cost on your ticket per additional day is only a few dollars.
- Wait as long as possible to get your tickets: you get the advance purchase price a few hours or many days in advance…so if possible, make sure that the weather looks like it will cooperate, since Disney doesn’t typically issue refunds for MVMCP. Heavy rain and freezing cold can make it more miserable than magical. Having said that though, there is no guarantee that tickets will be available on any given night: some nights do sell out since Disney does limit the number of tickets sold so that crowds are kept down. So if it matters to you which date you go, then get them to be certain. And hope for good weather.
- Anticipated busiest nights? November 28 because of Thanksgiving weekend is one for sure. Fridays will typically be busier (due to locals attending) than Tuesdays or Thursdays. And generally speaking, the closer you get to Christmas, the more likely you will deal with higher crowd levels (and more likely to sell out).
Have you attended Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party? I would love for you to add your strategies for attending and making the most of your time and money!

I often suggest going to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party for those guests on a tight budget and only planning one day at Disney World. They can save money on this special event ticket and visit from 4-midnight for 8 hours instead of purchasing a 1-Day Pass. Great article!
Great point Allison. For 8 hours of Disney holiday fun…compared to the price of a 1 day pass, it’s a bargain!
Thanks so much for your comment!

Does anyone know how to find out if you can definately get into the park for the Christmas party at 4? We are going up Sunday the 12th and plan to park hop Monday the 13th. We just went to the Halloween party and our Disney resort told us we would be able to get in the park at 4 instead of 7. I called Disney today and asked if the same would be true for the Christmas party and was told that would be determined each day individually. He said we could go to the park at 5:30 and see if they’ll let us in. Doesn’t give us much info for planning. I have a 3 and 4 year old and the ticket prices for the Christmas party aren’t worth it if we get in at 7. I noticed you both mentioned the 4:00 entrance time as if it was standard. Did I just get an uninformed cast member on the phone? LOL
Lisa from everything that I have heard and personally experienced, Disney does let you in early. That being said, the party does “officially” start at 7, so I don’t know that they especially publicize the fact. You could try calling again and see if you get a different answer that is more in line with what folks seem to experience, in order to feel more certain. Good luck!
Forgot to mention, we’re thinking of going to the Christmas party Sunday the 12th and we are staying at a Disney resort, if that matters.

We want to go to mickey’s very merry christmas party on dec. 19th but I can’t get tickets its saying sold out is there somewhere else I can purchase 3 tickets for that night?
Karen I am sorry it is sold out! Unfortunately, the only place I am personally familiar with to get tickets to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is directly through Disney. I checked Undercover Tourist and they sell park tickets and ones for La Nouba, but no special event tickets. Now I also did a google search for “buy tickets to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party” and there were a few ticket vendors that came up that say they sell tickets to MVMCP. Not being familiar with them, I can’t vouch for the companies: they may be reputable but be very careful. If you want to try to buy from one of them, make sure they have been doing business for a while and that they are authorized Disney ticket agents. Good luck, I hope you are able to go!
Nancy, you responded to Karen’s post by saying that the tickets for December 19 had to be purchased through Disney. However, the article says that advance purchase is not available for December 19. Please clarify. I too had Karen’s question. My son turns 4 that day and I’d really like to be able to go the the Christmas party. If we can show up at the gates on Sunday the 19th and buy tickets, then I don’t mind spending the extra money.
Thanks.
Hi Celeste, thanks for asking me to clarify. I have read multiple places that the party for that night is sold out, which I guess is why Disney is not selling advance tickets, and presumably, there will not be any available that night at the gate. However, I agree that it is confusing. If it were me, I would probably call Disney directly and just ask them if tickets will be available at the gate or not. Karen had asked if tickets for MVMCP could be purchased anywhere besides Disney: I have personally not done this, but a google search that I did showed that there are ticket brokers that do apparently sell Christmas party tickets. Whether they have any for the night of the 19th, I can’t say. I also would do my due diligence before buying from a broker like this. Some are legit, but unfortunately, the one I trust and have used, Undercover Tourist does not sell MVMCP tickets. Good luck and I hope it works out for your son’s birthday!
I see the last question was asked in 2010. Not sure this thread is still open.
I am confused about the advance purchase of MVMCP. By advanced do you mean a few days or will they be available months ahead of time? We are coming Dec 13 or 14, 2012 to MK and I read above where someone said you can only purchase the MVMCP ticket and NOT purchase the regular park ticket. I ready on another site where you had to buy the regular admissions ticket AND pay for the MVMCP ticket, too. I am so confused.
Also, I was told that Friday, Dec. 14 would be the best day for MK b/c of the magic hours on Thursday, Dec 13. THEN I read that it will be more crowded (Above in a comment) on Friday b/c of locals that will be there. UGH!!! I don’t know what the smartest move is. Can you help me with my questions:
1) Thursday or Friday for MK?
2) Buy regular ticket AND MVMCP ticket in order to participate? OR just MVMCP ticket, go at 4pm and enjoy the rest of the night for only that ONE price
3) When is the earliest they will open these tickets for sale?
Thanks,
Karen
Hi Karen, thanks for stopping by. Tickets for MVMCP typically go on sale at some point over the summer….and yes I do recommend that you purchase them as early as you can. Some nights do sell out, and if it really matters to you that you go, and you have limited times when you go, then I would get them so to be safe. Plus, they are cheaper in advance. To clarify though, you do NOT need theme park admission for that day. So if you want to save a bit of money, yes, just use your MVMCP ticket and arrive at 4. As to whether you go Thursday or Friday, the estimated “crowd level” will have no bearing on how crowded the park is for MVMCP, as that is a closed event. But yes, more locals will probably come to the party on Friday, so if you have the option to go Thursday, that is probably what I would do.
Hope this helps and happy planning!
THANKS, Nancy!
